    The Mourning Cloak is a very large familiar butterfly. The pale border on the an otherwise dark wing distinguishes this butterfly from other butterflies. Close up the wings are a dark maroon colour with a strong contrasting yellow border. It has a large wing span between 45 to 79 mm.

    Mourning Cloaks have 2 generations (2 chances to see the butterfly in flight) per year, either in early spring or in the fall. Since the adults hibernate they are among one of the first spring butterflies to appear.
