- The crown of this tree is conic and the bark is scaly and brownish. The needles are flattened with two distinct white lines on the underside of the needle.

- Eastern Hemlock is incredibly shade tolerant, surviving with as little as 5% of full sunlight. The tree is also capable of withstanding suppression for as long as 400 years.
