- The leaves of this plant grow in tall erect groups. Beachgrass is the most important plant on the beach because it stabilizes sand and prepares the foredune for further colonization by other plants.

- Beachgrass has be to be covered by at least seven centimetres of sand over the year to be able to survive. Its rhizomes(roots) trap the sand like a very fine-meshed net. All parts of the plant effectively trap the sand and create a more stable shoreline.
